Just festival officially opened its doors yesterday at 8PM in the presence of Just Festival's chairman Raymond Baudon, its director Katherine Newbigging as well as the staff, volunteers working at the festival, representatives of the selected charities Streetwork and Mercy Corps and Reverend Wilfred Orr. A large audience attended this event, named for the occasion "Just Starting".
The opening started in music and on a joyful note with Manchester International Roots Orchestra. St John's Church Reverend Markus Dünzkofer then welcomed the audience and the festival which he qualified of a "necessary disruption of our routines". Each year, the festival is the occasion to meet and greet people from everywhere, he said, an opportunity to learn about others and ourselves.
Katherine then invited Raymond Baudon to cut the red tartan ribbon and the a cappella singers of Simply Soweto Encha closed the opening with a swinging beat. The audience was finally directed towards the church's hall for an African cocktail prepared by Knights Kitchen.
The opening event ended around 10:30, when the last audience members left after saying goodbye to the artists and staff members they had been chatting with.
But this is not the end: the festival is just starting!
